“Provisions according to that which the Lord” commands

In The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Christ, we learn that Lehi and his family travelled in the wilderness for 8 years before they came to the land Bountiful. After they had been there “for the space of many days,” Nephi was commanded by the Lord to build a ship. When the ship was finished Lehi was told by the Lord that it was time to board and leave. They gathered supplies for the journey. Not only did they gather what they knew to take such as food and seeds but items the Lord instructed them to take with them:

1 Nephi 18:6 And it came to pass that on the morrow, after we had prepared all things, much fruits and meat from the wilderness, and honey in abundance, and provisions according to that which the Lord had commanded us, we did go down into the ship, with all our loading and our seeds, and whatsoever thing we had brought with us, every one according to his age; wherefore, we did all go down into the ship, with our wives and our children.
8 And it came to pass after we had all gone down into the ship, and had taken with us our provisions and things which had been commanded us, we did put forth into the sea and were driven forth before the wind towards the promised land.

The Lord can do the same for us. We have been given general guidelines for food storage and preparedness, but the specifics and the additions should be determined by each family with the Lord’s guidance. He can help us determine what we as individuals, no matter our age (see verse 6), and individual families need to have in our personal storage programs. Not everyone needs exactly the same supplies. Not everyone needs to prepare to camp. Not everyone needs to prepare to evacuate. Not everyone needs to prepare for an earthquake. Not everyone needs to prepare for a hurricane. Not everyone needs to live on 10 acres and raise animals. Not everyone needs to store more food than is needed by their family. But maybe you do. Let the Lord help you be better prepared for your life, the prophesied events of the latter-days, and what the Lord needs you to do.
