GET LOW on the lowest floor possible or underground
HOLD ON to a sturdy object

Most injuries are from flying debris; remember to protect your head.

IN HOMES–Stay away from windows and outside walls. Go to the basement or to an interior closet or small room. Get under something sturdy, if possible.

IN CHURCHES—Move quickly to an interior bathroom or hallway. Crouch down and cover your head. Or get under a pew and cover your head.

IN SCHOOLS OR FACTORIES–Move quickly (follow advance plans) to shelter areas or to an interior hallway on the lowest floor. Crouch low, facing down and cover your head with your hands.

IN HIGH-RISE OFFICE BUILDINGS–Go to interior small rooms or hallways on the lowest floor possible or to interior stairwells. Crouch down and cover your head.

IN SHOPPING CENTERS–If available, go to designated shelter areas; otherwise, take cover in an interior rest room or small shop. Do not go to your car.

IN MOBILE HOMES—Get out immediately and go to the nearest sturdy building or storm shelter. If that is not possible, run to an open area and protect yourself as though you are in open country.

IN OPEN COUNTRY—Get as far away from trees and cars as you can. Lie flat in the nearest depression or ditch and cover your head with your hands. Be alert for flash flooding.

IN YOUR CAR–Do not try to outrun the tornado. If available, take shelter in a sturdy structure; otherwise, get out of your car and lie flat in the nearest depression or ditch and cover your head with your hands. Be alert for flash flooding.
