The Modern Pioneer’s Guide

An online friend surprised me by sending me an advance copy of her new book. The Modern Pioneer’s Guide by Ashley Parkinson is like no other food storage/preparedness book available and offers some ideas to consider incorporating into your preparedness plan.

The food storage focus of this book is affordable food that can be cooked on a stovetop, camp stove, wood stove, or open fire. It delivers in both aspects. You won’t find expensive powdered eggs or freeze-dried food in her recipes. Instead, you will find grocery store purchased foods in a collection of tried and tested recipes most kids and adults will like. The author emphasizes personalizing the recipes for your family. She plants the ideas, offers suggestions, and gives you the freedom to decide how to vary the recipes and what to plan for your own emergency meals. These ideas and recipes will help you get through an extended power outage or eat well on a camping trip. Be sure to plan for some extra fuel to cook some of the recipes or incorporate a wonder oven (hay box) into your cooking plan.

Also included in the book are herbal remedies, 72-hour kit ideas, and long-term camping tips.

The herbal remedies offer a good collection of fairly easy-to-make home remedies. It looks like a good and easy way to get started in this field of personal health care.

The 72-hour kit ideas offer lots of ideas for tools, supplies, and emergency food and remind you not to forget about first aid and sanitation.

The long-term camping supplies and tips recall pictures of my husband’s grandmother camping in Yellowstone National Park all summer long and canning berries on a wood stove they hauled in with them. There are some, I believe, who should prepare for this kind of camping. If you feel compelled to prepare for it, then do it.

This book is a good guide to get you started with off-grid cooking and preparedness. Whether that off-grid experience is at home or in a camp somewhere, it doesn’t really matter. It’s also a way to get started working with herbal remedies. The author’s resource list will guide you to more detailed information on herbs and everything else she touches on.

Give the book a try for some new perspectives on food storage and preparedness. The Modern Pioneer’s Guide by Ashley Parkinson is available from Amazon in paperback or e-book.
