Earthquake Safety Tips

The greatest danger is from falling and flying objects.
Do not get in a doorway.
Do not try to run outside.

DROP, COVER, AND HOLD ON

IN HOMES – Move away from windows, hanging objects, fireplaces, and tall unsecured furniture. Drop to the floor. Get under or next to a heavy piece of furniture or against an inside wall and hold on; or cover your head and neck with your arms and hands. If in bed, stay, turn face down, and cover your head and neck with a pillow.

IN A HIGH-RISE BUILDING – Move away from windows and glass partitions. Drop to the floor. Get under a heavy table or desk, against an inside corridor or hall, or near a pillar or support column, and hold on; or cover your head and neck with your arms and hands.

IN A SHOPPING MALL – Move away from windows and display shelves. Drop to the floor. Move against an inside wall or corner, or get under a table, counter, or bench, and hold on; or cover your head and neck with your arms and hands.

IN THE OPEN – Move away from buildings, if possible. To avoid flying glass, run to an open area. Stay away from waterways or swimming pools. If you are at the beach, move to higher ground. If near hills or mountains, watch for falling rocks, landslides, or avalanches.

IN A CAR – Pull over and stop away from trees, buildings, bridges, overpasses, underpasses, or overhead electrical wires. Keep your seat belt on. Set your parking brake.
