Rethinking Your Food Sources

“Prince Valiant” in the comic section of the newspaper featured a story last year (2023) that takes place in old Wales. A despot rose to power and caused a war which forced the people into famine. The warfare caused barren conditions in the region, and the farmers could not grow crops while the fighting continued. The people were starving.

One man knew how to take care of his family even under those dire circumstances, however. He was able to rethink his food sources. Instead of harvesting from the land, he harvested from the sea – seaweed, shellfish, and fish.

Can you rethink your food sources, if necessary? Look to other sources of food besides grocery stores and big box stores. Think about restaurant suppliers, farmer’s markets, direct contact with farmers, and foraging. Go online to see what’s available. Look into co-ops and group orders for food from long distances. Think about bartering with a neighbor or friend who has a large garden or orchard. Be alert to people who are not using the fruit growing on the trees on their property. Be willing to expand your parameters for obtaining groceries and think outside the box.
