The Creation as a Pattern for Food Storage and Self-Reliance

The scriptures offer us many patterns for ministering to others, administering in the Church and our lives, changing ourselves and otherwise governing our lives and stewardships. The creation offers one such pattern that can be applied to food storage and self-reliance.

Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

• First, create a plan and space for your food storage

Genesis 1:3-4 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good...

• Store light sources – flashlights and batteries, oil lamps and oil, wood for fireplaces and firepits, lanterns and kerosene, candles, matches, etc.

Genesis 1:9-10 And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, … and God saw that it was good.

• Store water.

Genesis 1:12, 29 …the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good….And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.

• Store/raise plant based foods – fruit, vegetables, grains, beans, fats and oils, nuts, seeds, sugars, peanut butter.

Genesis 1:21, 25 And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good….And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

• Store/raise animal based foods – meat, poultry, fish, butter, eggs, milk, cheese, honey

Genesis 1:27 God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

• Store human comforts and necessities – clothing, shelter, health/medical needs, toiletries, cleaning supplies

Genesis 2:3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

• Take time from physical preparations and work to rest the body and to enrich the soul and spirit – to become spiritually prepared.

Genesis 2:15 And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.

• Work, garden, and practice cleanliness.
