Milk vs. Whey

Many people have trouble getting their families to drink nonfat dry milk.  When they find whey milk products and taste them, they like the flavor and want to store them instead of nonfat dry milk.  The following 2 analyses and the accompanying chart are to help you understand that they are not the same as milk for many reasons.  You need to understand the differences before making a decision to store whey milks.

Milk-Lite Low Fat Whey Milk vs. Nonfat Dry Milk

The role of milk in a healthy diet is to provide calcium, riboflavin (Vit B2), and protein. When looking for a milk substitute, those three nutrients are the most important to compare. Milk-Lite whey milk provides a similar amount of calcium and riboflavin to nonfat dry milk but only 38% of the protein. When relying heavily on food storage, the protein from milk is important because meat, eggs, and cheese may not be readily available. Milk provides a complete, high-quality protein while beans and grains, which are important protein sources, are incomplete protein sources and must be supplemented by a different incomplete protein or a small amount of complete protein. Nonfat dry milk would be a better protein value then Milk-Lite for children and pregnant or nursing women who can drink milk. Two cups of skim milk provide the following percentages of the RDI for protein:

100%

3-year-old
  67% 6-year-old
  57% 10-year-old
  33% women
  27% men

Nonfat dry milk contains no fat. Thirty percent of the calories in Milk-Lite are fat calories. While this fat helps Milk-Lite taste and feel like 1% milk, it also contributes to a shorter shelf life. Milk-Lite has a shelf life of 9-12 months. Nonfat dry milk can be successfully stored for at least 24 months and up to 20 years.
Because Milk-Lite is a formulated product, it can be consumed by many people who have milk restricted diets and is probably the most nutritious option available to them.
Milk-Lite does not have the same amount or kind of protein as milk. It, therefore, cannot be used to make cheese, yogurt or pudding.
Milk-Lite yields about 70 gallons per 50 pounds while the milk yields about 60 gallons per 50 pounds but Milk-Lite is still more expensive per gallon than nonfat dry milk.
